Embracing Joy: Cultivating Positivity in Pregnancy for Every Woman

This is a topic close to our hearts here at Omugwo International: finding joy in pregnancy, especially for those facing financial challenges or belonging to vulnerable communities. It is a known medical fact that people cope better when they feel confident, and hopeful.  Women who are low income and/or in a vulnerable situation can sometimes not feel joy in their pregnancies because they are facing anxieties and/or trauma. 

We understand the importance of nurturing positivity during this transformative journey. We do this by curating what we call Moments of Joy.  This can look like providing low cost maternity photos and baby showers or helping to source free maternity clothes and newborn clothes. We take this part of our work very seriously. Let’s explore some uplifting ways we help curate Moments of Joy , by encouraging and planning some of these events for our clients.

Mindful Moments:

We encourage mothers-to-be to embrace mindfulness practices, even amidst life’s challenges. Savoring small moments of tranquility can have profound effects on mental well-being. Simple activities like deep breathing exercises, gentle stretching, or mindful walks in nature.

Gratitude Journaling:

Inviting expectant mothers to start a gratitude journal, a powerful tool for shifting focus towards the positive. We encourage mothers to jot down three things they’re grateful for each day, no matter how small. This practice fosters a mindset of abundance and appreciation, helping to counterbalance any hardships they may face.

Community Connection:

We emphasize the importance of building a supportive community of fellow mothers and caregivers. We organize virtual or in-person gatherings where women can share their experiences, offer encouragement, and celebrate each other’s milestones. We facilitate spaces where they feel seen, heard, and valued, fostering a sense of belonging and solidarity.

Creative Expression:

We encourage expectant mothers to explore their creativity as a means of self-expression and joy. Whether it’s painting, journaling, dancing, or singing, creative activities can serve as outlets for processing emotions and connecting with the beauty of pregnancy. We provide resources and ideas for creative projects they can enjoy both individually and with loved ones.

Self-Care Rituals:

We empower women to prioritize self-care as an essential component of their pregnancy journey. Offering suggestions for nurturing self-care rituals, such as indulging in a relaxing bath, helping to source low cost or free massages, or providing self-love affirmations cards. We affirm to them that taking care of themselves is not selfish but necessary for their well-being.
